About Us
Our Story
South Central Bead Co. began when Ken, his wife Sarah, and their two daughters retired from 20 years of active duty in the US Air Force. After exploring the world together and separately, they felt drawn back to Alaska—the place where their family story started. Like many military families at a crossroads, they considered their next adventure: "What now?"
What's The Bead Idea?
Ken grew up fishing the warm stillwaters of Texas but found his true passion in the cold, flowing rivers of Alaska after moving there in 2001. Meanwhile, Sarah was pursuing a degree in Business Management and amassing an impressive collection of nail polish. Ken’s fascination with fly tying and bead painting, combined with Sarah’s business acumen and colorful nail polish supply, sparked a creative idea. That inspiration led to the founding of South Central Bead Co. in the winter of 2019.
Made for Alaska
Every bead we offer is thoughtfully designed and rigorously tested right here in Alaska. Our production cycle follows the rhythm of the seasons: during our long winters, we focus on crafting and refining new bead designs; in spring, we develop and prepare for the upcoming fishing season. Summer and fall see us out on the rivers, field testing our beads to ensure they not only look appealing but also closely mimic the natural eggs found during and after salmon spawning. We use a variety of methods and materials to achieve realistic effects and vibrant colors. As a small, family-run Alaskan business, we take pride in producing quality products that truly reflect our local expertise.
